Thing #2

I just finished reading the "Ongoing Web Revolution" article. I was fortunate enough to be in the audience at the CIL Conference last April. The Pew Foundation research is so interesting, it makes so much sense, and sometimes it is necessary to have the facts presented to you so that you think about things in terms of reality. Such as the fact that most people don't think of getting on a computer but rather as getting on the Internet. The other thing that strikes me is that as the title suggests, the web is a work in continual progress. I fear that we will just get staff used to My Space, Facebook, flickr, etc. and newer, fresher, more exciting sites with some sort of tweak will be introduced. Our key will be to get staff interested and aware and develop skills that can be transferred to accessing and using new sites that we aren't yet aware of. Sign on to the concept of collaboration and community. Also to think of the sites in terms of how they can be beneficial to the libary such as the examples mentioned in the article. Things that are actually used, not just set up so that a library can say they have "2.0 Stuff." I think that blogging is relatively easy and can get to be pretty addictive for some people. I think that librarians and blogging actually go well together.
